A timber firm which employs more than 650 people in the UK and Latvia is set to takeover Britain's largest sawmill, it has been revealed.

BSW has agreed a £5 million deal to buy Howie Forest Product, the Scottish company which owns the sawmill.

Tony Hackney, BSW chief executive, explained that the move is part of a long-term expansion plan.

He said: "Howie Forest Products is an established, profitable business which is well managed and deserves its rightful position as the UK's number one sawmill."

Currently, BSW operates five mills in the UK and one in Latvia.

It is thought that the deal will not result in any job losses.

Recently, Kaspars Herhards, the Latvia's minister of transport, told the Baltic Times that timber has helped the country's railways maintain freight volumes in spite of the recession.

Other European nations have seen the level of goods transported by train fall in recent times.
