Russia to raise timber duty?

The Russian government could be set to introduce a rise to its export tax of timber, it has been announced.

Natural resources minister Yury Trutnev announced the news this week, adding that the move would be needed to react to protectionist measures taken by traders.

It is believed that the decision, which has already been postponed from its original implementation date of January 1st 2009, could negatively affect forestry investment in the country.

Mr Trutnev told the Moscow Times: "We've [delayed the move] at the request of our economic partners. But if, in response, they put up barriers to our products, we're not likely to feel the need to continue defending them quite so attentively."

Romanian prime minister Emil Boc recently told the Financial Times that the country's government is to push through a series of tough reforms to help it meet its obligations to international creditors, which could affect the Romanian timber industry.
