The Romanian president Traian Basescu has stressed the importance of developing infrastructure links with Moldova during a visit to its capital, Chisinau.
Speaking yesterday (January (27th), Mr Basescu said that such links should include energy infrastructure, gas transportation and the railways, Financiarul.ro reported.
In addition, Mr Basescu announced that following discussions with the Moldovan president Mihai Ghimpu, the two countries had agreed on several priority projects including the establishment of a 110 kilo-volt electricity line between Falciu in Romania and Gotesti in Moldova. It is hoped this will be operational by the end of 2010.
Mr Basescu said that Romania would take responsibility for the costs incurred by forging links with the Moldovan energy system.
"Also as part of the neighbourhood policy, we plan to achieve a project for the linkage of the gas transport system at Dochia-Ungheni-Iasi, so that the Romanian pipeline gas transport be linked to the Republic of Moldova's," he added.
Last week, Financiarul.ro reported an announcement by Mr Basescu which outlined Romania's desire to join the international Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
