New statistics show Latvia has experienced Europe's strongest increase in total manufacturing working on orders, which could interest those looking to invest in timber in the region.

Figures published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, reveal the country's performance in this area has increased by 5.8 per cent, one of the four member states to register a rise.

In total, the euro area industrial new orders index fell by 5.2 per cent between November and December 2008.

Compared to 2007, it decreased by five per cent in the euro area and 4.9 per cent in the EU27.

Eurostat employs 870 people and exists to develop and fuel demand for statistics about the region.

In other news, the Baltic Course recently reported that Latvia exported 3.15 million cubic metres of roundwood timber in 2008.

Figures from the Agriculture Ministry's Forests Department show there has been a 14.6 per cent fall in the twelve months preceding this.
