Latvia exported 3.15 million cubic metres of roundwood timber last year, it has been revealed.

Figures released to Leta by the Agriculture Ministry's Forests Department reveal that export levels in 2008 were down by 14.6 per cent when compared to 2007, the Baltic Course reports.

The value of exported timber also fell sharply, hitting 124.21 million lats (£156.3 million), a decline of 26.5 per cent over the same period.

Over the course of 2008, Sweden was the main market for Latvia's roundwood timber, taking a total of 1.06 million cubic metres.

Finland and Estonia were the other two main export markets for the material last year.

Imports of roundwood timber into the country fell by 64.4 per cent over the same period, with Belarus Lithuania and Russia accounting for the majority of the 336,700 cubic metres which entered Latvia.

Recently, Finland-based forestry company Metsaliitto revealed that it sourced 2.6 million cubic metres of timber for customers and sawmills in the Baltic region last year.
