Romania's new prime minister is a financial expert Lucian Croitoru.

The country's president Traian Basescu was forced to nominate a new PM after the previous government was ousted after a vote of no confidence.

Mr Croitoru, who has links to the country's Liberal Party, is a former representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and an adviser to the country's central bank.

The new prime minister is clearly aware of the size of the task facing him and has warned of grave times if the does not meet the criteria for the release of more of the international support loans that have been agreed.

He said: "If we fail to obtain the two tranches of loans, including that due between October and December, we risk finding it impossible to pay salaries and pensions."

However, the first task facing Mr Croitoru is selecting a cabinet which meets with parliamentary approval.

The latest political crisis in the country started when Dan Nica MP was sacked from the cabinet.
