Estonia could join the euro as soon as next year, according to the country's prime minister.
Speaking at a news conference, Andrus Ansip revealed that the nation's government is confident that it will meet the criteria for adopting the single currency sooner rather than later.
"It is possible Estonia will request an extraordinary assessment from the European Commission and European Central Bank this year," he said.
The purpose of taking this step would be ensuring that Estonia can join the euro from July 1st, 2010, Mr Ansip said.
Inflation targets set out by Europe could be met by October of this year, he added.
The comments come the day after Marten Ross, deputy governor of Eesti Pank, stated that Estonia was on course to adopt the single currency by 2011.
He also claimed that the nation could be one of the first countries to emerge from the current global economic downturn.
