'Decision needed on Baltic power links'

The Baltic states must commit themselves to a power link connecting them with Sweden, according to the Estonian foreign minister.

Speaking to Latvijas Avize, Urmas Paet explained that a power cable linking the Scandinavian nation with its neighbours across the Baltic is the right thing to do, reports the Baltic Times.

He called on Latvia and Lithuania to decide which of them will host the Baltic end of the link.

"Maybe I am too optimistic, but it ought to be done by 2015, when we should have a single Baltic and Nordic energy market," Mr Paet said.

Once the link is complete, energy markets in the nations involved will be more open than in the past, he added.

Last month, STT reported that Finland will commit €100 million (£89 million) worth of its EU funding to help with the construction of an undersea power line between the nation and Estonia in order to boost integration of energy markets.
