Cheap Latvian timber 'boosts Norfolk firm'

Competitive timber prices in Latvia and Sweden have helped one Norfolk-based firm boost its sales by 75 per cent in the last six months.

Speaking to EDP24, Brian Thaxter, director of Thaxters of Holt, explained that a fall in demand from business has been offset by an increase in the number of people looking to improve their homes and gardens.

"We're doing more retail than building trade now and I think it's all down to price, quality and the service that we give," he said.

The firm sources all its own timber and despite the recession, things just seem to keep getting better and better, Mr Thaxters added.

Founded in 1968, with £600, the firm has now transformed in to a business with a £1.5 million turnover.

Meanwhile, Latvia could be in for another boost, with Kasimir Nenestothy, a spokesperson for the Austrian Chamber of Agriculture, recently telling Renewable Energy World that heavily forested countries are at the forefront of bioenergy efforts.
