Traian Basescu received 32.44 per cent of the vote in the first round of the Romanian presidential elections, the results of the Central Election Bureau (BEC) show.
Throughout the elections Basescu has been backed by the Democratic Liberal Party.
In the election, Social Democratic Party leader Mircia Geoana followed with 31.15 per cent and ranking third was Crin Antonescu, president of the National Liberal Party, who secured 20.02 per cent.
Next in the ranking was Greater Romania Party leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor and the representative of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romanians Kelemen Hunor, who got 5.56 per cent and 3.83 per cent of the vote respectively.
Sorin Oprescu received 3.18 per cent of the vote and George Becali received 1.19 per cent. The remaining candidates won under one per cent of the Romanians' vote.
Commenting on the results of the first round of the elections, Basescu called them a "profound victory for the right", reports Business New Europe.
The second round of the Romanian presidential elections will take place on December 6th, when Geoana and Basescu will go head to head.
