Competition among Baltic ports is fierce when it comes to container cargo shipments, Cargonews Asia has reported.

Speaking to Baltic Business News, Aivars Taurins, head of the Latvian Logistics Association, explained that countries in the region are keen to attract as much traffic as possible because it helps boost economic development in general.

He said: "The competition is sharp in the whole Baltic Sea. Currently as many containers go through Finland as through Latvia and Lithuania [put] together."

The nations also have to compete with ports in Poland and Russia, Mr Taurins added.

In terms of the transit of timber, Latvia faces the greatest competition from Lithuania and Russia, he stated.

Recently, the Baltic Course reported that Latvia is seeking closer agricultural trade ties with the US.

Speaking to the LETA news agency, agriculture minister Janis Duklavs, revealed she met with the new American ambassador to discuss a range of issues.
